Supporting Veterans and Their Families with Higher Education

The Wisconsin GI Bill provides full tuition and segregated fee remission for eligible veterans and their dependents for up to eight semesters or 128 credits, whichever is greater, at any University of Wisconsin System or Wisconsin Technical College System school. This is a state-funded program and is separate from the federal GI Bill®.

The Wisconsin GI Bill provides a waiver of tuition and fees, administered by participating University of Wisconsin (UW) System institutions and Wisconsin Technical Colleges. For more details, visit:

Eligibility

A qualifying veteran is a Wisconsin resident who was either:

  • A Wisconsin resident at the time of entry into active service.
  • A Wisconsin resident for at least five consecutive years before enrolling in a qualifying institution.
Two-Part Eligibility Process
  1. WDVA Certification: Confirms the individual qualifies as a veteran.
  2. School Determination: Ensures the student meets statutory eligibility requirements for tuition remission.

If applying as a spouse or child, you must also meet the “Residency for Tuition Purposes” criteria.

Eligible Family Members

A veteran’s spouse or child may qualify if the veteran:

  • Has a 30%+ service-connected disability rating from the VA.
  • Died in the line of duty or due to a service-connected disability.
    Family members must meet the same residency requirements as the veteran.

Military Service Requirements

The veteran must have:

  • Served 90+ days during wartime OR 2+ continuous years (or full initial obligation) during peacetime.
  • Been honorably discharged due to:
    • A service-connected disability.
    • A subsequent adjudicated service-connected disability.
    • Force reduction.
  • Served in a designated crisis zone or received an eligible expeditionary/service medal.

  2. Enter required details and complete the Privacy Agreement.
  3. Upload your DD214 and other documents.
  4. Review your eligibility matrix to see qualified benefits.
  5. If eligible, click Apply Online Now for the Wisconsin GI Bill.
  6. Complete your application through your UW or Wisconsin Technical College institution.
